The Bionicle Story – Internal LEGO Case Study on BIONICLE’s Success

Up next from DuckBricks and Christian Faber is a document entitled The Bionicle Story. This isn’t exactly what it sounds like at first brush – it’s actually a narrative presenting BIONICLE’s market success during its launch in 2001, and the story of how that success was achieved from the team’s perspective. Versions of this have floated around under an alternate title, Story Selling, but this is the first time we’ve been able to read the full document in English!

There is a lot of interesting material within. If you, like me, where a kid who was indoctrinated as a die-hard fan right from the get-go in 2001, you might be surprised to see just how intentionally architectured the way you engaged with the property actually was. The piecemeal distribution of the BIONICLE lore and story was designed to invest a child in seeking out more to learn the full picture, in just the same way as they hoped kids would want to collect every mask. More on that and a bunch of other insights in the PDF!
