Reign of Shadows: The Untold Stories 10th Anniversary + 2006 Serials News

Big news from Myths and Legacy!

We at Myths and Legacy hope you’ve been enjoying our new stories, The Shadows We Cast and Ashes of the Arena! Today we have some more exciting news and brand new story content!

Reign of Shadows: The Even Less-Told Stories

Ten years ago, in September and October of 2016, Nicrophora released an epic work of fanfiction, a tome expanding on the criminally underexplored setting of Makuta’s reign over the Matoran Universe. Expanding on stories such as Axonn’s and Brutaka’s adventure in the south to the resistance in Metru Nui to the pockets of rebellion throughout the world and all the characters we’ve come to know and love, The Untold Stories filled out Greg Farshtey’s comparatively small Reign of Shadows serial and explored every tantalizing subplot that had been promised, yet never delivered. The serial was a source of great inspiration for us at Myths and Legacy and a key reference for what we wanted to do here.

Then, five years after that, in the fall of 2021, things came full-circle. Nicrophora completed an extensive revision of the whole story which we published on our site. Alongside this, we merged Reign of Shadows: The Untold Stories with the original Reign of Shadows, forming a seamless chronological experience. For the first time, one could navigate the dark era of Makuta’s reign without flipping between two different works. And because nearly every character had a first and second subplot, the combined story’s contents could be divided very neatly into a first and second half of equal length.

Now, five years after that and ten years after the original work, we’ve come back one more time to Makuta’s Reign of Shadows. Inspired by discussions with Nicrophora, we have prepared two more chapters to round out the story!

Ever wondered what happened to Keetongu after Teridax sent him south? Ever wanted to know the fate of the Mahri Nui Matoran under Makuta’s yoke? Ever been curious about Lewa’s activities before flying to Artakha? Or speculated at the activities of the Bahrag? Look no further! See these plus a forgotten prologue to The Powers That Be in our brand new chapters here!

(Note: It’s possible to read these chapters in isolation, but familiarity with the stories of Reign of Shadows and Reign of Shadows: The Untold Stories is recommended.)

Five years ago, I discussed some of our ideas with Nicrophora, and as we bounced ideas off each other, we refined and expanded M&L’s pitches. However, Nicrophora wasn’t involved in writing these chapters and only gave some feedback on the works after they were completed. As such, these should not be considered official expansions of the original Reign of Shadows: The Untold Stories. These chapters are, however, official updates to the BIONICLE Destinies project and are canon to Vision of the Great Beings.

We hope you enjoy these brand new, never-before-seen glimpses into Makuta’s Reign, and we continue to applaud Nicrophora for the excellent tome that is Reign of Shadows: The Untold Stories.

2006 Serials

Wait, 2006 Serials?

It might sound strange to hear the phrase “2006 serials.” Greg obviously never published serials in 2006, only launching the first online the following year. But for some of us at M&L, the absence of online stories during the first year of the Ignition Trilogy has always felt like a glaring oversight, particularly considering just how much happened off-screen in this time. How did Krakua learn of Karzahni’s escape? What made the Shadowed One go from tolerating Roodaka to sending the Toa Nuva after her? How was Spiriah captured by the Order of Mata Nui? How did Lariska and Ancient learn of the Order of Mata Nui? What battles happened between the Dark Hunters and the Brotherhood of Makuta in their war on the eve of the Destiny War? What happened around Metru Nui during this time (and before Heart of Metru Nui?) All these questions and more, hinted at throughout the Dark Hunter guide, Bionicle World, and the BEU, have remained mysteries… until now.

Here, in the last ten weeks of 2026, for our 20th anniversary celebration of the 2006 story, the Myths and Legacy team is proud to present the lost 2006 serials! Written by Jeff Douglas and Kirika Aeon, these stories will form the true starting point of the Bionicle serials and formally bridge the Matoran Universe of 2005 with that of 2006. Without Kirika, none of this would have ever happened, and stay posted after these are released for an exciting prequel story filling out the adventures of Ancient and Lariska!

Starring Krakua, Dweller, Lariska, and Roodaka, these serials feature a host of familiar faces and unseen adventures. Although each story can be read individually, the best experience is to read them together to see hidden connections and obscure plotlines. Additionally, like the new Reign of Shadows chapters, these stories are canon to Vision of the Great Beings and will also tie into those stories in unexpected ways.

We are so excited to begin this adventure with you later this week!

Vision of the Great Beings Housekeeping

Lastly, some housekeeping. Most of you will no doubt be aware of the recent drama involving Vahkiti. Vahkiti was a big reason that Vision of the Great Beings exists, and he was one of the main leads from the start. He helped promote it and M&L in 8/10 BIONICLE Day festivities and elsewhere, and doubtless not a few people learned about us through his work.

Given the recent news, however, valued as his work was, we have parted with Vahkiti and aren’t interested in collaborating with him for the foreseeable future. As he was Litestone’s representative on the VotGB team, we consulted with the rest of Litestone about the future of Visions of the Great Beings, and they’ve decided to step away from the collaboration. We’ve parted quite amicably and returned many of their assets, and we wish Litestone the best with their many game projects. Moving forward, VotGB and everything under its umbrella will continue as a solely M&L project. Planned collaborations with Le-Koro Band are also on indefinite hold. Vision of the Great Beings is now fully the same as M&L’s Destinies project, which included our revised serial reading experience, the full RoS:TUS compendium, and now the 2006 serials and other related works. Once the 2006 serials are published, we’ll post a full guide to the Destinies works.

Although we are excited for VotGB’s future and all the projects we have planned, we are saddened by these recent developments and will do whatever we can to help those affected by Vahkiti’s gross behavior. For more on this, see MOD’s official statement.

It’s going to be an exciting, busy year ahead! Stay tuned for more story content from Lost Head on the back end of the serials, while stay tuned for the 2006 serials from Jeff and Kirika on the front end!
