Protosquad and More. What Lies Ahead for Mata Nui?

Scan of a pamphlet distributed with the Bionicle Protosquad. Mostly black, the top has the bionicle.com URL, as well as the roundel Bionicle logo. Text in the Bionicle cipher reads 'What lies ahead for Mata Nui.'

(You see a Kirikori emerge from a pile of boulders labelled “THE 40-HOUR WORKWEEK”, like in a heavy-handed political comic. The bug crawls slowly and tiredly to a computer labelled “BIONICLE’S MAINFRAME” and begins punching complex algorithms into it. She turns and looks at you sheepishly, but tries to act casual.) Oh, hi there!

While BioMedia Project continues its slow gestation into its beautiful new butterfly form, I wanted to get posted a few things that folks have generously been contributing to the archive. We appreciate you, even if the site has been sitting on a long pause!!

Protosquad ZIP

The headliner is a bunch of material that was sent out to members of the Protosquad. Slumber has acquired a collection from a former member and got a bunch documented: comic scripts, postcards, and a CD with some trailers and behind-the-scenes content for Mask of Light.

Polish Scans

From krussy come scans of the original Polish editions of Mata Nui and Makuta’s guides, as well as the Polish-exclusive (probably) Glatorian II and IV, from the book series famous for publishing The Crossing.

Comic 6 Inks

HeroraNuva sent in a photo of Carlos D’Anda’s inks for page 2 of comic 6. They included a cool message of explanation, so I’ll let them speak for themselves:

Hello BioMedia Project!

I realized that I’m in possession of a piece of Bionicle media history that I would love to make sure is saved in the archives of your site. It’s one of the originally inked comic storyboards. It’s of page 2 issue 6 of the original comic run, where Tahu is about to jump into the Bohrok nest but Kopaka talks him down.

I won it back in 2008 as the grand prize of a Bionicle trivia contest Greg Farshtey ran in Connecticut, and it’s been one of my prized Bionicle possessions since. I realized that you guys have other inked comic pages on your site and wanted to make sure this one is saved for other fans to see.

Let me know if this picture will work for you.

Thanks,

HeroraNuva

It absolutely works for us! Speaking personally as a huge fan of D’Anda’s art, more of the original inks is always a delight.

Thank you as always to the everyone who contributes to keep our archive growing. I promise we aren’t dead!! There’s a lot of stuff you’ve sent in over the past year or so that we still haven’t added, but it is on the way… I need to go climb back under the boulders now, but I’ll continue to be here too sometimes.
