Kaipou, Toa of Stone

This is a MOC by Bonktacular Productions

A jolly and charismatic warrior, Kaipou usually prefers taking a less serious approach to things. In battle, he and Ropuu enjoy counting their kill count out loud to see whose the better fighter. He’s a friendly soul who trusts all of his team mates completely.

Well, almost all of them…..

The video starts off as a slideshow, showing Kaipou in a few poses and expressing his personality. It evolves into storytelling set to the music, covering the unfortunate demise of the character. I really like Kaipou’s design, it’s simple, though very fun. I especially like the hammer, using the agori jetpack as the striking end and the zamor sphere launcher as the forks sticking out at the back. The waist also has an interesting construction, allowing his upper body to twist left and right at the hips. Since Kaipou’s body is a Metru torso, it’s gear mechanism doesn’t play well with a two handed hammer. His twisting waist compensates for this, allowing him to swing the hammer horizontally instead.

As for constructive criticism, I would love to see a revamp that gave Kaipou both a vertical and horizontal swinging mechanism. It would require a complete redesign at the cost of his classic Toa Metru torso though. I’m tempted to use Kaipou as inspiration for a MOC of my own, using the steering from the LEGO telehandler mounted to a second axis for vertical movements. I think that would let me swing and control a two handed weapon on both a vertical and horizontal axis from one knob. That might be overcomplicating the design though, compared to just sticking a vertical swing gear box on top of a horizontal turntable?

Bonktacular Productions has more creations you can check out here on youtube. Most of his creations are Toa sized, and feature varying levels of complexity, with each of them have interesting building techniques. He typically uses this slideshow storytelling format, though he does talk on-camera for other presentations, like in his “12 days of Bonkmas” videos.
