BIONICLE: The Official Comic Magazine
The DC BIONICLE comic started out strong with a presence alongside the LEGO Club magazines in North America, the UK, and Germany. But very quickly, there were cuts on the European side. Installments would be edited down and inserted into the pages of the LEGO magazine itself, to save the cost of printing a separate comic book. And when the comics WERE printed separately, they were sporadic and numbered differently from the full run in NA.
In 2003, LEGO apparently gave up completely on self-publishing the comic in Germany and handed the rights over to Panini Comics, a prolific publisher of children’s comics in Europe. Panini reformatted the comic to fit the European style, adding in several extra activities plus a cheap toy attached to the cover. These editions have been poorly documented online up to now, so we’re grateful to Gilahu for photographing their nearly complete collection to preserve on BMP! Some of the unique features of The Official Comic Magazine include:
- Extended character bios
- Posters
- Fanart features
- A lexicon that looks suspiciously like it was copied from Biosector
- A two-issue photocomic adaption of Mask of Light!

Everything can be browsed in full in the comics section. Gilahu also kindly photographed their two issues of the comic from before Panini took over! Issue ‘2’ and issue 10 in German have been added to their respective pages.
