Authured by Purple_Dave Laswell on July 13th 2001, some links no longer work, and the Gold Hau contest is no longer running.
Having trouble keeping track of all the names and terms? There sure are a lot of them, so here's a list to tell you who's who, what's what, and all that.
Note that there is also an official Lexicon at BIONICLE.com.
Stands for BIOlogy chroNICLE. It's the name of the whole line.
The benevolent supernatural being who is currently in a deep sleep. The villagers named the island after him.
Brother to MATA NUI, he is an evil supernatural being that's really screwing up the island and making life generally unpleasant all around.
The six Heros that arrived to save the island from the clutches of evil.
TOA of Fire. Wears the HAU MASK and wields a sword of fire that can cut through rock.
TOA of Earth. Wears the PAKARI MASK and has powerful claws that can dig through earth.
TOA of Stone. Wears the KAKAMA MASK and has very powerful feet that can kick boulders very far or destroy them.
TOA of Water. Wears the KAUKAU MASK and has hooks for hands that are useful for climbing. GALI is the only female TOA.
TOA of Air. Wears the MIRU MASK and wields a large battle-axe that cleaves through vines and tree branches.
TOA of Ice. Wears the AKAKU MASK and wields a shield and a sword that can cut through hard objects.
At some point in the story, the Toa will split into two groups of three. Each group will combine to form a very large single character called a TOA KAITA. The names of these characters seem to only be found on the mini-CD that comes with the TOA sets. They can be found by completing the rock game, or by reading further in this glossary.
TOA KAITA formed by the combination of TAHU, ONUA, and POHATU.
TOA KAITA formed by the comination of GALI, LEWA, and KOPAKA.
Village leaders that must help the TOA find all the MASKS
TURAGA of Fire. Wears the HUNA MASK and wields the ancient FIRESTAFF.
TURAGA of Earth. Wears the RURU MASK and wields the DRILL OF ONUA.
TURAGA of Stone. Wears the KOMAU MASK and wields a stone hammer.
TURAGA of Water. Wears the RAU MASK and wields a trident. NOKAMA is the only female TURAGA.
TURAGA of Air. Wears the MAHIKI MASK and wields the KAU KAU STAFF. (No relation to the KAUKAU MASK)
TURAGA of Ice. Wears the MATATU MASK and wields a huge ice pick.
There has been no mention of how this character fits into the story, but it is very similar to the TOA KAITA in that can be built with all six TURAGA models. There are no official instructions for this model, but we have some home-made ones posted here.
Villagers and followers of MATA NUI. The TOA are here to save them from MAKUTA.

Also known as 'pecking birds', these resemble ostriches and are also raised in PO-WAHI.
Small land-crabs used extensively in ONU-WAHI for many tasks, and also raced for sport. It is widely known that the purple ones are the coolest looking ones.
Not an official term, but the villagers of GA-KORO harvest fish from the sea.

Region of Fire and the area where TA-KORO is located. Volcanic activity is a constant danger to the denizens of this region.
Region of Earth and the area where ONU-KORO is located. KOFO-JAGA are hidden in the depths of this region. The TOHUNGA of this region use USSAL crabs for transport and heavy labor activities. They also race them.
Region of Stone and the area where PO-KORO is located. NUI-JAGA have been sighted in this area. MAHA goats and HUSI pecking birds are the local livestock.
Region of Water and the area where GA-KORO is located. The TARAKAVA are a constant threat from below. There are fish to be found here, but no official name for them has surfaced.
Region of Air and the area where LE-KORO is located. Dangerous beasts such as the FIKOU spider and the NUI-RAMA can be found here. It is also rumored that MUAKA and KANE-RA lurk within the jungle depths. KAHU are used as an airborne cavalry to help defend the local village.
Region of Ice and the area where KO-KORO is located.
Village of Fire. Located on the far eastern edge of the island, this village is tucked away in an what used to be an underground lava riverbed. Volcanic eruptions and lava rivers are some of the hazards that must be endured to live in this area.
Village of Earth. Located in the northwestern area of the island on the edge of the desert, this village consists of tunnels and caves deep underground. As dark areas seem to be what MAKUTA favors, this is not a good place for a vacation.
Village of Stone. Located in the desert of the northern section of the island, this village is built of rock and sand. Harsh desert conditions and sandstorms can make living here a challenge.
Village of Water. Located on the bay in the northeastern area of the island, this village is made entirely from seaweed and floats with the currents. Strong currents and whirlpools will draw the unwary down to the unknown dangers that await below.
Village of Air. Located in the middle of the dense jungle that covers most of the southern half of the island, this village is disguised to look like the hanging vines of the trees that hold it off the ground. The dark swamp and abundant RAHI are some of the dangers present in this area.
Village of Ice. Located in the icy glaciers on the western side of the island, this village is hidden under a huge block of ice to protect it from avalanches and icy storms. Hidden glacial crevaces can pose a threat to the unwary in this region.
