Glossary of Terms

BIONICLE™
Stands for BIOlogical chroNICLE. It’s the name of the whole line.

MATA NUI
The benevolent supernatural being who is currently in a deep sleep. The villagers named the island after him.

MAKUTA
Brother to MATA NUI, he is an evil supernatural being that’s really screwing up the island and making life generally unpleasant all around.

TOA
The six Heroes that arrived to save the island from the clutches of evil.

TAHU
TOA of Fire. Wears the HAU MASK and wields a sword of fire that can cut through rock.

ONUA
TOA of Earth. Wears the PAKARI MASK and has powerful claws that can dig through earth.

POHATU
TOA of Stone. Wears the KAKAMA MASK and has very powerful feet that can kick boulders very far or destroy them.

GALI
TOA of Water. Wears the KAUKAU MASK and has hooks for hands that are useful for climbing. GALI is the only female TOA.

LEWA
TOA of Air. Wears the MIRU MASK and wields a large battle-axe that cleaves through vines and tree branches.

KOPAKA
TOA of Ice. Wears the AKAKU MASK and wields a shield and a sword that can cut through hard objects.

TOA KAITA
At some point in the story, the Toa will split into two groups of three. Each group will combine to form a very large single character called a TOA KAITA. The names of these characters seem to only be found on the mini-CD that comes with the TOA sets. They can be found by completing the rock game, or by reading further in this glossary.

AKAMAI
TOA KAITA formed by the combination of TAHU, ONUA, and POHATU.

WAIRUHA
TOA KAITA formed by the comination of GALI, LEWA, and KOPAKA.

TURAGA
Village leaders that must help the TOA find all the MASKS.

VAKAMA
TURAGA of Fire. Wears the HUNA MASK and wields the ancient FIRESTAFF.

WHENUA
TURAGA of Earth. Wears the RURU MASK and wields the DRILL OF ONUA.

ONEWA
TURAGA of Stone. Wears the KOMAU MASK and wields a stone hammer.

NOKAMA
TURAGA of Water. Wears the RAU MASK and wields a trident. NOKAMA is the only female TURAGA.

MATAU
TURAGA of Air. Wears the MAHIKI MASK and wields the KAU KAU STAFF. (No relation to the KAUKAU MASK.)

NUJU
TURAGA of Ice. Wears the MATATU MASK and wields a huge ice pick.

TURAGA NUI
There has been no mention of how this character fits into the story, but it is very similar to the TOA KAITA in that can be built with all six TURAGA models. There are no official instructions for this model, but we have some home-made ones posted here.

TOHUNGA
Villagers and followers of MATA NUI. The TOA are here to save them from MAKUTA.

JALA
TOHUNGA from TA-KORO, the Village of Fire.

ONEPU
TOHUNGA from ONU-KORO, the Village of Earth.

HUKI
TOHUNGA from PO-KORO, the Village of Stone.

MAKU
TOHUNGA from GA-KORO, the Village of Water. MAKU is the only female TOHUNGA who has been produced as a toy.

KONGU
TOHUNGA from LE-KORO, the Village of Air.

MATORO
TOHUNGA from KO-KORO, the Village of Ice.

HAFU
TOHUNGA from PO-KORO. Comes with the BIONICLE™ CD.

RAHI
Creatures native to the island that have fallen under MAKUTA’s control via INFECTED MASKS.

NUI-RAMA
Mosquito-like creatures that attack with their powerful wings. They each wear two INFECTED RURU MASKS.

NUI-KOPEN
Wasp-like creatures that are very similar to the NUI-RAMA. They wear two INFECTED RURU MASKS.

NUI-JAGA
Scorpion-like creatures that attack with their stingers. They each wear two INFECTED PAKARI MASKS

TARAKAVA
Lizard-like creatures that attack with their fore-legs. Some wear a INFECTED PAKARI MASK and others wear a INFECTED KAKAMA MASK.

TARAKAVA-NUI
The King Lizard also attacks with its fore-legs, and wears an INFECTED PAKARI MASK.

MUAKA
Tiger-like creature that has a lunging bite attack. Wears two INFECTED HAU MASKS.

KANE-RA
Bull-like creature that has a lunging bite attack. Wears two INFECTED HUNA MASKS.

KUMA-NUI
Giant rat that is, oddly enough, larger than MUAKA or KANE-RA. Also has a lunging bite attack, and wears two INFECTED HAU MASKS.

MANAS
Large crab-like creatures that attack with their large claws. Some wear two INFECTED RURU MASKS and others wear two INFECTED KOMAU MASKS.

MANA-KO
Humungous crab-like creatures that attack with even larger claws. They wear two INFECTED KOMAU MASKS.

BEASTS
Not an official term, but a way to distinguish the regular creatures from those controlled by MAKUTA’s INFECTED MASKS.

KAHU
Large birds that are not actually controlled by MAKUTA. Used by the LE-KORNAN Windriders to defend their village. They do not wear any MASKS at all.

MAHA
Goat-like herdbeasts raised by the TOHUNGA of PO-WAHI.

HUSI
Also known as “pecking birds”, these resemble ostriches and are also raised in PO-WAHI.

USSAL
Small land-crabs used extensively in ONU-WAHI for many tasks, and also raced for sport. It is widely known that the purple ones are the coolest looking ones.

FISH
Not an official term, but the villagers of GA-KORO harvest fish from the sea.

LIGHTNING BUGS
Again, not an official term, but these giant TOHUNGA sized insects oversee slave labor in the NUI-RAMA nest near LE-KORO.

FIKOU
Deadly tree-spiders that will attack unsuspecting TOHUNGA in the jungles of LE-WAHI.

KOFO-JAGA
Fire-scorpions that lurk within the caverns and tunnels of ONU-WAHI. Known to be afraid of light, they are still very dangerous to run into, especially since they are usually found in large groups.

KANOHI
MASKS that bestow great power on anyone who wears them.

GREAT MASKS
MASKS of enormous power that can only be worn by the TOA.

NOBLE MASKS
MASKS of moderate power that can be worn by the TOA or the TURAGA.

INFECTED MASKS
MASKS that have been corrupted by MAKUTA and cause any wearer to turn evil.

HAU
GREAT MASK of Shielding. Worn by TAHU. Protects against attacks that are expected, but not ambush.

PAKARI
GREAT MASK of Strength. Worn by ONUA. Increases physical strength.

KAKAMA
GREAT MASK of Speed. Worn by POHATU. Allows user to move at incredible speeds.

KAUKAU
GREAT MASK of Water. Worn by GALI. Allows user to breathe underwater.

MIRU
GREAT MASK of Levitation. Worn by Lewa. Allows the user to float and glide on air.

AKAKU
GREAT MASK of X-Ray Vision. Worn by Kopaka. Allows the user to see through stuff.

VAHI
GREAT MASK of Time. It’s unknown who wears this MASK. Alters time so that the user moves faster than the rest of the world. Pictured by clicking the ‘MASK’ link in the video game section of the official website. There is no mention of whether this MASK has been produced for the toys or if it will only be available to characters within the video games.

HUNA
NOBLE MASK of Concealment. Worn by VAKAMA. Bestows invisibility.

RURU
NOBLE MASK of Night Vision. Worn by WHENUA. Allows the user to see in darkness of any type.

KOMAU
NOBLE MASK of Mind Control. Worn by ONEWA. Allows the user to control the minds of others.

RAU
NOBLE MASK of Translation. Worn by NOKAMA. Allows the user to read any language.

MAHIKI
NOBLE MASK of Illusion. Worn by MATAU. Allows the user to create illusions.

MATATU
NOBLE MASK of Telekinesis. Worn by NUJU. Allows the user to move things with his mind.

TA-WAHI
Region of Fire and the area where TA-KORO is located. Volcanic activity is a constant danger to the denizens of this region.

ONU-WAHI
Region of Earth and the area where ONU-KORO is located. KOFO-JAGA are hidden in the depths of this region. The TOHUNGA of this region use USSAL crabs for transport and heavy labor activities. They also race them.

PO-WAHI
Region of Stone and the area where PO-KORO is located. NUI-JAGA have been sighted in this area. MAHA goats and HUSI pecking birds are the local livestock.

GA-WAHI
Region of Water and the area where GA-KORO is located. The TARAKAVA are a constant threat from below. There are fish to be found here, but no official name for them has surfaced.

LE-WAHI
Region of Air and the area where LE-KORO is located. Dangerous beasts such as the FIKOU spider and the NUI-RAMA can be found here. It is also rumored that MUAKA and KANE-RA lurk within the jungle depths. KAHU are used as an airborne cavalry to help defend the local village.

KO-WAHI
Region of Ice and the area where KO-KORO is located.

TA-KORO
Village of Fire. Located on the far eastern edge of the island, this village is tucked away in an what used to be an underground lava riverbed. Volcanic eruptions and lava rivers are some of the hazards that must be endured to live in this area.

ONU-KORO
Village of Earth. Located in the northwestern area of the island on the edge of the desert, this village consists of tunnels and caves deep underground. As dark areas seem to be what MAKUTA favors, this is not a good place for a vacation.

PO-KORO
Village of Stone. Located in the desert of the northern section of the island, this village is built of rock and sand. Harsh desert conditions and sandstorms can make living here a challenge.

GA-KORO
Village of Water. Located on the bay in the northeastern area of the island, this village is made entirely from seaweed and floats with the currents. Strong currents and whirlpools will draw the unwary down to the unknown dangers that await below.

LE-KORO
Village of Air. Located in the middle of the dense jungle that covers most of the southern half of the island, this village is disguised to look like the hanging vines of the trees that hold it off the ground. The dark swamp and abundant RAHI are some of the dangers present in this area.

KO-KORO
Village of Ice. Located in the icy glaciers on the western side of the island, this village is hidden under a huge block of ice to protect it from avalanches and icy storms. Hidden glacial crevaces can pose a threat to the unwary in this region.

MASK CODE
A three-character code found inside a KANOHI toy. The MASK CODES in the GREAT MASKS are used with to unlock areas of the mini-CD that comes with each TOA, and in conjunction with the SECRET WEB CODES to unlock areas of the official website.

SECRET WEB CODE
A three-digit code found on the sides of the TOA cans and used with the MASK CODES from the GREAT MASKS to unlock areas of the official website.

GOLD MASK IMAGE
Pictures of a gold HAU MASK that are used to enter the contest to win a solid-gold HAU MASK. Images can be found on the official website, in LEGO® Mania magazines, and in select locations visited by BIONICLE™ cars.
