The Beasts Within

The new BIONICLE® Rahi Beasts book is akin to the earlier Scholastic guides, The Official Guide to BIONICLE and BIONICLE: Metru Nui — City of Legends , both in size and appearance. That should come as little surprise as this is indeed a guide to the Rahi that inhabit the world of BIONICLE.

The book is written at the time of the RAHAGA and TOA HORDIKA. RAHAGA NORIK introduces the book and provides some of the history of the Rahi. This is quickly followed by an alphabetical presentation of the Rahi.

For the bulk of the book, each Rahi is shown in a full-page picture and some details are included about the Rahi on the facing page. The text description concludes with some knowing remarks from one of the RAHAGA.

The back of the book proclaims that it is “filled with never-before-seen photographs of actual models,” but that is stretching the truth a little bit. Yes, there are many never-before-seen entries from the Rahi Building Challenge, but the rest of the book is padded with previously seen promotional images. For the likes of the MANAS, NUI-RAMA, TARAKAVA, and other Rahi from the 2001 model year, this is a bit of a problem because those images are from Mata Nui and they don’t quite blend with the other images, all placed in Metru Nui.

The Appendix contains short descriptions without pictures of the many Rahi found in the Adventures books or the LEGO ® Club BuildIts section. It is unfortunate that those images could not also be included, but at 104 pages in length and a reduced price (compared to the previous guides of only 80 pages), this is an understandable limitation.

If you want to see the best of fan-created Rahi, or if you want to know what a Fader Bull is, or if you just want to have information about all of the Rahi close at hand, then this book is for you.
